Da Vinci Surgical System

Norwalk Hospital recently added the Da Vinci Surgical System to augment its minimally invasive surgery suites. The Da Vinci Surgical System was delivered to Norwalk Hospital in September ’08 and the first procedure at Norwalk Hospital was performed in October. This state-of-the-art robotic surgical system enables surgeons to perform complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision. The surgeon views an actual image of the surgical field while operating in real time through tiny incisions and using electromechanically enhanced instruments.

Dr. Jonathan Bernie led the effort to acquire the Da Vinci Surgical System. Dr. Bernie became affiliated with Norwalk Hospital in 2004. He completed his laparoscopy fellowship and robotic surgery training at Indiana University.

The Da Vinci system is being used in urologic procedures including prostatectomy for prostate cancer, pyeloplasty, lymph node dissection, gynecologic procedures including hysterectomies and oophorectomies, as well as general surgical procedures such as bariatrics.

Patients who have surgery with the Da Vinci System experience less pain and discomfort, fewer complications, minimized blood loss, minimal scaring, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times.

Seed money to purchase the Da Vinci Surgical System was provided by a long-time donor to Norwalk Hospital.
